Important Things to Do After Arriving In Australia:
I have written this article to let you know some basic and important things to do after arriving in Australia, the main theme is that you must come prepared rather then wondering and asking others what to do. I have just mentioned the important things and have explained individual heading in a separate article and you can find it in same category.
1. Airport Pickup:
I assume that you have already arranged some service for airport pickup. You can ask any of your friend or relative in Australia for this purpose or can arrange TOGOTO service. You must ask your university if they provide any airport pickup service or ask them to tell you how can you arrange this service.
I suggest you to bring enough money with you because initial expenses tend to be more. Once you are settle and know everything then expenses will be reduced. If you have already arranged an accommodation then $2000 will be enough. Hopefully you would have found some job before you budget is finish.
It is your responsibility to make sure that all of your possession (luggage, stuff you brought) is saved. You should keep you money in save location and straight away open a bank account and deposit it. In Australia, you will seldom find any one carrying hard cash; almost all carry debit/credit cards.
4. Buy A Mobile/Mobile Connection:
If you are already out of house and have created a bank account then I suggest you to go to any mobile franchise like Optus, Telstra, 3 mobiles and buy a SIM card. If you do not have a mobile phone then you can also get one there. It’s better to consult some one before a connection because there are too many packages and plans available.
5. Apply For Tax File Number (TFN):
Try to get access to internet by asking your friend to lend you his computer or go to a net café and apply for Tax File Number. You won’t be able to do a job without a TFN. Applying for TFN is really easily and is done online through a website and will get your TFN with in a week.
6. Apply For Work Visa - Student visa before 26 April 2008:
Your passport has only got a student visa; it means you are here to study. In order to get a permission to work you have to apply for Work Visa. You existing visa will be cancelled and a new visa will be provided that will allow you to study as well as work in Australia. This rule apply to Students who have got Student Visa before 26 April 2008.
Even though you are already enrolled and have paid your semester fee but still you have to go to your university and have to do enrollment again. This session includes enrollment, orientation etc., only then your university will forward your enrollment to DIMIA and you can get appointment for getting a work visa.
If you have not arranged any accommodation then it’s the best time for you to keep searching for place to live. You can ask your friends; contact other people from your country for possible accommodation. Universities also provide some services and guide lines to international students in finding accommodation.
